Wp4Work Package 4 will identify the potential and most appropriate approach for tourism, undertaken with involvement from Danube communities and fishermen. In addition the concept ‘Caviar Road’ will be developed, a tourist notion that follows the caviar journey. Tourist facilities, including a fisherman’s shelter at Isaccea will be established as part of Caviar Road.

Duration: Full project duration

Objectives: The Danube Delta has a high potential for the development of nature based and science adventure tourism due to its richness in biodiversity and the presence of rare or unique flora and fauna species. Nature and adventure tourism are part of the ecotourism which in Danube Delta is seen as the best way to reduce the pressure exerted on fish resources and to create a new source of income for the local communities. The main objective of the WP is to create and promote new models for sustainable tourism involving inhabitants from the villages in the Danube delta, especially those affected from loss of income due to the ban of sturgeon fishery. This will involve the creation of tourist packages and facilities which will combine the active tourist activities with the specific interpretation of sturgeon fishery / fishing history and biology and of the sturgeon based fishermen communities. The WP will focus on the development of the necessary tourism infrastructure and tourist offer requested by this type of tourism and will provide a model for the development of a sustainable nature/adventure tourism based on fish resources.

Methodology: Investigate the opportunities for tourism development in the sturgeon based fishermen settlements and sturgeon reproduction centres, use the inputs from the WP 2 and 3 to create the most suitable tourist activities and packages based on sturgeons, design and create the specific infrastructure (eco-lodges, fully equipped vessel for sturgeons observations, small shelters for tourist-fishermen interaction, walking, boating and driving trails, aquarium, interpretation materials), train the fishermen as local guides and interpreters.

Deliverables:
• Local meetings with the sturgeon fishermen
• Two “Caviar Road” product label tourist packages
• Walking, boating and driving trails (the map of the Road of Caviar and its main tourist objective)
• Pilot sturgeon based adventure tourism facilities: eco-lodge, specially equipped tourist boat for sturgeon observations, shelter in a selected place on the bank of the Danube River for touristfishermen interaction, sturgeon – tourist interaction aquarium
• Interpretation materials: panels, leaflets, maps, guides, brochures on history / traditions of sturgeon fishing and biology
• Interpretative website – “Caviar Road”
